Mary Stone

Mary Stone

by Frank Daniels IV || Executive Producer

When Mary Stone isn’t on stage performing, she graciously makes that space available for other Moore County musicians.

You can find her many nights with her keyboard and guitar, atop her cajón, playing originals, covers and signature mashups of songs from different eras and genres. With her band-mate Cierra Doll, the two perform as Stone Dolls, and she sits in with other bands regularly, like Over, Never Out, when they find themselves in need of talent to fill the bill. Stone has been working with Pine Gap Audio to record a slew of singles with a country twang.

And if that’s not enough, in 2020, after sitting at Neville’s for what would be the last drink they served for months, she began to wonder, “how can I support these venues and artists when no one can go and get drinks or watch them play?” Thus was born “Sopines Scene.”

Through Sopines Scene, Stone champions her fellow musicians, highlights the diversity of the scene and hosts a destination for anyone looking to support live, local musicians. Each week, you can find the Sopines Scene Weekend Lineup. Stone and a team of dedicated creators collect the music happening at the many venues of Moore County for the upcoming weekend. Sprinkled among those posts are clips of open mic nights, karaoke, local bands and the Radio Sessions podcast.

The podcast was a follow-on to what were live music conversations. Stone hosted near 100 musicians at the Jefferson and then, after it closed, the Sunrise Theater Loft for a performance of original songs and a discussion of the stories behind them. That continues on the podcast.

She invites musicians, most recently Scarlet Tantrum and Hydryver, into the studio to learn about their process. They talk about the inspiration behind their music, the challenges inherent in the life of an artist and the joy and beauty of creating something that can bring people together. You can also hear what’s new and next with the area venues. Derrick Numbers of the Neon Rooster spoke about the re-opening of the Aberdeen venue, and Micah Niebauer came in to discuss the Buggy Factory by Southern Pines Brewing in Carthage and tease their new venue in Fayetteville.
